societal change can be messy

Welcome to Volume #2 of the Reflect newsletter. Let’s get going:

This week's reflections

  1. Top clip: AI (Sophia) explaining recent upheavals

  2. Pop and a Pause: AI debugs Alzheimer’s; Catch a vibe(code)

Pop

A quick, topical reference to something happening in tech or culture.

AI identifies a path to treat Alzheimers

UC San Diego researchers used AI to uncover a hidden gene switch that may trigger Alzheimer’s. The discovery led to a molecule, NCT-503, that blocks the effect—showing promise as a potential treatment.

…and a Pause

A deeper editorial dive on a topic.

Catch a vibe(code)

The era of “vibe coding” has arrived, where AI autonomously codes entire software projects.

OpenAI’s recent launch of Codex exemplifies the shift with an AI agent integrated into ChatGPT, capable of writing code, debugging, and running tests.

OpenAI also recently acquired Windsurf, an AI-powered dev tool, for ~$3 billion, to keep up with Cursor.

Cursor, the fastest SaaS company to reach $100M in annual revenue, is wildly popular as an AI vibe coding tool.

The heaven and hell of vibe coding

I used a similar tool, Cline, to create an entire logging and monitoring suite in 2 hours, then watched it delete my database.

Egg on my face for not having better protections (thankfully we’re still in stealth), but it was a valuable Icarus moment.

This is powerful tech but human involvement (aka Human-in-the-Loop) is critical.

100x

Coding with AI felt like a 10x jump in productivity… vibe coding feels like an additional 10x jump.

If we’re seeing a 100x jump in the creative process, we may be entering a golden age of products and tech.

But if engineers, once considered the rare and highly sought-after “hot girl at the party,” can be replaced… is any job safe? That’s worth a pause.

Your time capsule

Imagine a time capsule of you. A video montage of your evolution across time… with AI to help spot trends and share insights.
